Orchids Pavillion, Mexico, 2021

This pavilion was designed for orchids in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, a unique region located between the sea and the mountains. Mexico is one of the world’s richest centers of orchid diversity, with more than 1,000 native species growing in the wild. To thrive, orchids require a delicate balance of four environmental conditions: filtered sunlight similar to that found beneath a forest canopy, shade that prevents excessive heat buildup, humidity levels between 60 - 90%, and natural airflow that allows their roots to cycle appropriately between wet and dry states. To support these requirements, the pavilion was conceived as a form that gently fits between the large existing trees of the forest, becoming part of the landscape. Its geometry responds to the movement of the sun, creating suitable microclimatic conditions through passive environmental strategies. Water introduced from above flows gradually through a series of cascading surfaces, while the overall form helps regulate humidity and ventilation through natural physical principles. As a pavilion, it also serves as a stage for experiencing the beauty of orchid. Visitors are invited into a calm and contemplative environment where the discovery of the interior creates a sense of surprise, serenity, and quiet immersion in nature.
