Nuit Blanche, Paris, 2015

Commissioned by the City of Paris for La Nuit Blanche, the annual night-time arts festival, this installation was developed collaboratively by Chikara Ohno of SINATO and Yusuke Kinoshita of ARCHIEE in response to the COP21 theme of Climate. Climate is not an object but a phenomenon. It has no fixed form, yet we constantly perceive its presence. Titled Spectrum, the project sought to give temporary form to this invisible condition through a work situated between architecture, art, installation, and performance. The site was an abandoned tunnel awaiting its public opening. Within this raw infrastructural space, a suspended volume of twisted translucent organza was introduced. Suspended in haze, the fabric became a shifting cloud whose form continuously changed with the movement of air. Programmed light transformed this floating mass into an ambiguous presence somewhere between atmosphere and architecture. The soundscape was also composed by us. Frequencies around the standard 440 Hz tuning were subtly shifted and layered, producing delicate acoustic fluctuations that echoed the instability of the visual environment. Together, haze, light, and sound created an ever-changing atmosphere. Although the installation seemed almost alive, it remained entirely artificial—quietly reminding visitors that no constructed environment can surpass the beauty of the living atmosphere itself.
