Maison Cantagrel, France, 2023

Located in the rural landscape of Cantagrel, Leynhac, France, this house was conceived as a simple architectural presence within nature. It provides shelter from rain, wind, and the changing seasons while maintaining a close relationship with its surroundings. Inspired by the archetypal image of a house beneath a roof, the design reduces the dwelling to its most essential form: a single-story volume sheltered by a generous pitched roof. The project began with the image of a beautiful roof quietly standing in an open landscape. Outside the city, the roof is often the first architectural element perceived within the natural landscape. Through its low horizontal proportions, restrained material palette, and calm composition, the building settles gently into the meadow and among the surrounding trees. Its refinement is not derived from complex forms, but from a process of reduction. Rather than adding elements to satisfy functional demands, the design pursues simplicity while meeting the needs of contemporary living. This subtractive approach informs every detail, from the delicate roof detailing to the balance between solid walls and openings, creating a quiet elegance that allows the house to blend naturally into the landscape.
